A dog reportedly died on July 4 after swimming in Lake Travis near Point Venture , according to the Lower Colorado River Authority.
LCRA biologists took samples in the area to determine if toxic algae is to blame, but test results will not be available for several days. “We continue to encourage people to keep pets out of the lake near Point Venture, and to avoid contact with all algae, which can produce dangerous cyanotoxins at any time,” LCRA said on X.Dogs are at risk through ingestion. When picking up items from the lake in their mouth or licking their fur after swimming, it is possible that they might ingest harmful algae.
People usually experience eye irritation or rashes. Reactions are more severe when large amounts of water are ingested.They ask that the email contain information about the dog , when and where the dog was exposed, the dog’s symptoms and your contact information.Avoid areas with algae or that are stagnant.Don’t let dogs lick their fur or paws after getting out of the water.If your dog becomes sick after swimming, take your dog to a veterinarian immediately.
