Nottingham Panthers star Adam Johnson died after a collision in a game against Sheffield Steelers
Today Nottinghamshire Live is calling for ice hockey's Elite League to rethink its position on neck guards.
The statement itself said that "the use of a... neck laceration protector is recommended" in line with existing guidance from the International Ice Hockey Federation . In reality, the statement meant no change to the current rules and guidance. This IIHF recommendation was already in place before Saturday's awful tragedy.
But the problem is, the EIHA oversees all levels of ice hockey in England below the Elite League. The EIHA statement said neck guards would be mandatory from January 2024. The Elite League must have seen these calls. In fact, perhaps that was the reason for replies being turn off on the tweet. More than anything else, seeing players wearing neck guards would be a fitting tribute to Adam. The tragic consequence of the Elite League's decision means that the responsibility now falls to a group among those worst affected by this awful tragedy - the players.
