This weekend families will comes together across the UK and worldwide to celebrate Diwali 2023: the festival of lights.
Some homes are already decorated ahead of the event and streets will be decorated with small oil lamps. It is thought the light helps Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and good fortune - to find her way into people's homes. When is Diwali this year? Dwali is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik. It typically takes place on the day of the new moon, or Amavasya; this is considered the darkest night of the year. Every year the date is different and this year it falls on Sunday, November 12.
How do people celebrate? . Many people give their home a deep clean, buy gold or sliver items for good luck, exchange gifts and well wishes, have parties, as well as sharing delicious food and sweets.
