Designer Kusheda Mensah is making sustainable furniture meant for connection.
recently announced their distribution of ten grants for independent black businesses, of which Modular by Mensah, out of thousands of applicants, won. She only applied after another best friend encouraged her to do so. “It’s crazy, actually, because I applied on Thursday and got it on Friday. Samuel Ross messaged me saying ‘your work is incredible, and well deserved.’”
Despite growing recognition from figures within her industry and unmatchable support from her friends, who are her immediate creative community, Mensah admits she continues to experience a moment of stutter following the question,I do?” Growing up in Peckham, South London, where she still lives today, she might not have imagined calling herself a furniture designer growing up. But she has long dreamed of what she would like to create for her area, given the opportunity to do so.
What has your life at home been like since the pandemic started? Where are you living and who are you cooped up with? The main event has been working on myself, working out which I never used to do, and doing an online course at MoMa, which has been quite nice. I've also been thinking about my 'next move,' so to speak, with Modular and mostly trying to take care of friends who are alone during this period. I am shacked up with my boyfriend, eating loads, having sex a ton in the beginning but back onto a regular schedule [laughs].
The biggest one for me is staying inspired. I felt like there was something wrong with me, then I realized I'm an artist and I wouldn't expect, silly example, but: a bus driver to go to work without the bus itself to drive. You need the tools, equipment to do your job, the world around you to be inspired... and I haven't had that, so that's been tough.I don't know about this being unexpected because this is soooo me, but I love watching old reruns of MTV shows.
