Millions of women could potentially get thousands of pounds if an imminent ruling by the Parliamentary Ombudsman goes in their favour
Campaigners fighting for compensation for millions of women who they claim missed out when the government changed the state pension age for women have highlighted a key update. The Women Against State Pension Inequality group flagged up that an MP has secured an important debate in the House of Commons which could see the fight take a step forward.
@JimShannonMP for securing this Westminster Hall debate on compensation for #WASPI #1950swomen. A great opportunity for MPs of all parties to show their support for #FairandFastCompensation. WASPI carried out research which suggests that nearly four million women, mostly born in the 1950s, had their retirement plans thrown into disarray at the last minute when the DWP raised the State Pension age. The PHSO has already decided that the Department for Work and Pensions was guilty of maladministration in the way the changes were communicated to those affected and is currently investigating the damage caused.
Last month SNP’s Alan Brown brought a Bill to the Commons using the 10-minute rule. He said it would make the Secretary of State think up a plan to pay back women who lost out. With the PHSO currently deciding what compensation should be offered, he said level 6 of its remedy scale bandings should be applied, with payouts of £10,000 or more. He said that as a minimum, the pensioners should get at least level five in compensation, with payouts of between £3,000 and £9,950.
