The 38-year-old Ballymena United defender had surgery on a ruptured patellar tendon last week
Ballymena United defender Colin Coates celebrated his birthday on Thursday with a single can of Guinness.
"I got the operation, and the next day they try to get you out of bed and moving, but the pain was unbearable. I was then transferred to Musgrave for three nights."I was in a lot of pain and I thought I would go and get an X-ray to be sure. Yhe doctors knew straight away what I had done."The surgeon spoke to me on the Sunday and said I was better staying, because I need to get the surgery done quickly. With that injury, the sooner you get it done the better.
"But the damage had been done. Everything that was holding the knee together was ruptured, including the main tendon and bits on the side."I immediately thought it was my cruciate, but it turned out to be what it is. These things happen in football and you have to look at the positives."He faces a lengthy spell of recovery and rehabilitation before he even thinks about lacing up the boots again.
"I am determined to get back, without putting myself under any massive pressure. I will take it day by day and try and get the knee better as much as I can."They have been sending messages from time to time to keep me motivated. And they want to keep me involved in some capacity, once I am back on my feet.
