It may seem that Halloween is only over but already there are some confirmed dates for the Christmas lights being switched on across the country
Halloween is now a distant memory and as of November 1, it is perfectly acceptable to start thinking about Christmas.
The council is also giving seven young residents the opportunity to help The Mayor and Santa switch on the Christmas Lights in their local area. Tickets for the switch-on, entitled Let’s Glow Belfast, will be released at 10am on Wednesday, November 8, from visitbelfast.com, on a first-come, first-served basis .
Wheelchair accessible platform viewing for the event can be booked by calling 028 9024 6609 on Wednesday, November 8 - these are limited to two per booking due to restricted capacity. Terms and conditions apply. Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will launch the competition to find the best festive display on Thursday, November 16. In a change from previous years, the winners from Ballycastle, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Limavady will be selected and will receive their award on the evening of the Christmas Light Switch On in their town.
One winner will be selected from the following towns: Ballycastle, Ballykelly, Ballymoney, Bushmills, Coleraine, Cushendall, Dungiven, Garvagh, Kilrea, Limavady, Portrush and Portstewart. “In the last two years the format of the Christmas light switch on has changed to multiple streets across a wider area of the city and town centres,” she explained. “Santa and his festive companions travelled through the streets in procession with the Christmas lights switching on in their wake.
Members were also told that Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Patricia Logue, will be hosting a weekend of fun and festive delight in Derry and Strabane with all kinds of Christmas characters spreading yuletide cheer. Santa will be arriving by sleigh and the Grinch himself might put in an appearance! This also marks the beginning of the spectacular Lisburn Light Festival.
“There are lots of opportunities to meet Santa at Castle Gardens or at local events and you can also come along to the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum and pop a letter in our Christmas post-box. The Santa Parade starts from Wellington Street at 6pm and will feature floats, local school children with lanterns, Santa’s Clydesdale horses and dray and plenty of festive characters to entertain the crowds! Whitehead Christmas lights switch on on Saturday, December 2. Established in 2008, the street fair celebrates the heritage of the town with its Victorian theme.
