SANTA CRUZ — A Watsonville man acting as his own defense counsel was ordered this week to stand trial in a cockfighting and felony weapons possession case.

Brett Kenneth Miller, 58, was arrested after animal control officers searched his Ranport Road property Feb. 16 and discovered a pile of dead roosters under a tarp, a cache of weapons and ammunition and an alleged cockfighting ring. Among guns recovered from large storage containers on the property were three “black powder” firearms, considered by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to be antique guns.

Also charged in the case was 21-year-old Angie Michelle Gonzalez, of Watsonville. The two face similar weapons and animal cruelty charges. Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Syda Cogliati ruled Wednesday that sufficient evidence of one charge for each of deliberately tampering with the serial code on a firearm had not been properly proven to move forward to trial.

Assistant District Attorney Nicole Jones, prosecuting the case, referred extensively to still and video images recovered from Gonzalez’s cellphone during the two-day preliminary hearing this week. Among the images shown were Gonzalez holding a firearm, a video of a dog with what appeared to be a bird’s dismembered wing in its mouth and several videos of roosters being set on each other in a ring.

Santa Cruz County Animal Services Field Manager Todd Stosuy testified during the hearing that his animal control officers had passed along public reports of cockfighting at Miller’s Ranport Road property for years. When his office received a report from a Caltrans worker that they had concerns about dogs they were able to see down in the property from near Highway 1, Stosuy said he went out to personally investigate and was able to observe the presence of a large number of caged chickens.
