The Conservatives have chosen Laura Evans as their new candidate for Greater Manchester mayor after their previous candidate defected to Reform UK. Evans, who stood for the Tories in the last mayoral elections, will run for the role again in May.
The Conservatives have selected a new candidate to stand for Greater Manchester mayor less than 24 hours after their previous candidate defected to Reform UK. Dan Barker quit the party yesterday (March 21) after claiming he did not get enough support. Laura Evans , who stood for the Tories at the last mayoral elections in 2021, will run for the role again in May.
The former Trafford councillor who lives in Altrincham and works in IT won nearly 20 per cent of the votes last time, losing to Labour's Andy Burnham. She told the Manchester Evening News that she was 'devastated' that she could not put herself forward at first due to a 'family issue'. Residents in Greater Manchester Must Bring Photo ID to VoteResidents across Greater Manchester have been issued with an important warning - or they could face losing a basic right. People wanting to vote at polling stations must take photo ID with them or risk being turned away. New election laws were brought in the 2023 poll which required voters to show their form of identification in order to cast a ballot. If a voter did not have a valid photo ID, ahead of polling day they could apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Last year in Manchester, 1,649 people were turned away from the polling station for not having the correct ID.
