Residents across Greater Manchester have been issued with an important warning - or they could face losing a basic right. People wanting to vote at polling stations must take photo ID with them or risk being turned away. New election laws were brought in the 2023 poll which required voters to show their form of identification in order to cast a ballot. If a voter did not have a valid photo ID, ahead of polling day they could apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Last year in Manchester, 1,649 people were turned away from the polling station for not having the correct ID.

Last year in Manchester, 1,649 people were turned away from the polling station for not having the correct ID. A new letter, issued by Bury Council, said: "Remember - if you vote at a polling station, you must bring photographic ID." The warning was issued ahead of the 2024 Greater Manchester mayoral election, which is due to be held May 2. Similarly, Manchester City Council warned: "Voters need to show photo ID at all elections when they vote at a polling station. The name on your photo ID should be the same as the name you use to register to vote" and Rochdale Council say: "According to the government photo ID is required to improve the security of the voting process and reduce the risk of voter fraud.
