I wonder if there might be more to the roadrunner vs. coyote thing than simply cartoon fiction.
In a 1982 National Lampoon spoof, Wile E. even lost a lawsuit against Acme for supplying faulty products. He just can’t win! And this understanding makes me wonder if there is in fact a rivalry between our resident coy dogs and the roadrunners. In addition to the cameras, I often have live encounters with our wild neighbors as they come by to drink or feed in an environment we have kept as natural and inviting as possible.They seem comfortable here. The only food we put out is for birds, but our vegetation provides habitat and food with plenty of insects, lizards, snakes, snails and spiders. We also maintain a reliable water source in two fountains and a ground dish, and all are frequently used day and night by birds and wildlife.
In my case, he seems to be announcing his arrival while looking for me. He won’t get too close, but often follows me as I move around. He’s easily distracted, however, dashing off to grab a fresh snail or small lizard.
