If we didn’t know it before, we know it now. Kevon Looney isn’t scared of Sacramento. But then, as far as I can tell, Kevon Looney isn’t scared of anything. Maybe ghosts? But that hasn’t come up yet.. A flame, but obviously not a flamethrower like his Splash Brother co-workers. But a steady hand like Kevon is vital on a team like this, one powered by emotion and history and angst.
Before this year, Old Reliable had already proved himself many times over. In the interminable 2022-23 season, though, his contributions felt especially important. Through all the turmoil, the uncertainty, the minor and less-minor calamity, he was there doing his thing, getting after it. No questions asked. EpitomizingThat Looney is an indispensable part of this team isn’t exactly breaking news; all the fawning profiles of him are so well deserved.
All that to say, when the court scribes set down the Official and/or Unofficial Definitive History of This Era — whether it all ends this series against the Kings or with another unlikely championship or somewhere in between or even beyond — Kevon Looney’s name will ring out. It’s a name that deserves a special sort of respect in the midst of all the other respectable, beloved names. And not just because he grabbed 22 rebounds in by far the biggest game of the season.
Green has always been the mad key that has unlocked the best the Warriors had to offer, acting as the mobile five when whichever starting big man was invariably relegated to the bench for the minutes that really mattered. Despite their bruiser prowess and cagey dispositions, giant guys like Andrew Bogut, Zaza Pachulia, David West, and DeMarcus Cousins didn’t matter in crunch time because the Warriors destroyed teams with Draymond as the lone big.
