I watched Homer’s strangulations from as early as season one of the show - and for a long time I’ve hoped creators would stop it.
There have been countless times over the years I’ve felt uncomfortable watching The Simpsons ‘Why you little…’ It’s the iconic line Homer Simpson would mutter under his breath before charging at his son Bart, grabbing his neck and squeezing it until his tongue came out of his mouth and eyes bulged. I would laugh at the horror of it – the undeniably theatrical absurdity of anger – and then over the years, I stopped laughing.
The name itself is insulting, and I quickly became uncomfortable watching him. Apu an immigrant from West Bengal, with a wife from an arranged marriage and eight kids – all born at the same time. He has a heavy accent, initially played by white actor Hank Azaria putting on an Indian inflection.
