Burnley Borough Council had been in control of a 'Co-operative Alliance'
Local elections have been taking place across the UK, with more than 2,500 council seats up for grabs across 107 authorities. It is seen by many as the last big electoral test for all the political parties before the general election, which is expected to take place later this year.
Polls closed at 10pm on Thursday, May 2. There were 15 seats were contested in the wards Bank Hall, Briercliffe, Brunshaw, Cliviger with Worsthorne, Coalclough with Deerplay, Daneshouse with Stoneyholme, Gannow, Gawthorpe, Hapton with Park, Lanehead, Queensgate, Rosegrove with Lowerhouse, Rosehill with Burnley Wood, Trinity and Whittlefield with Ightenhill.Ahead of the election, no party was in overall control of Burnley Borough Council.
The tradition for council staff to work through the night on election day to declare their results in the early hours of Friday morning was abandoned by many Town Halls during Covid and most areas have not resumed this practice post-pandemic. The majority of councils will not start counting ballots until the working day starts at 9am on Friday morning and won’t declare the results of their local elections until Friday afternoon, or even later on Friday evening and into Saturday.Other elections are taking place across Lancashire however there is no vote for Lancashire County Council this year - with the next ballot taking place in 2025.
Mayoral elections have also been taking place in Greater Manchester as well as East Midland, Liverpool City Region, North East, South Yorkshire, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire, London and Salford.
