'Art is subjective but it doesn’t have to be exclusive.' writes Public Engagement Editor Oseye Boyd.

It took two years for “We. The Culture: Works by the Eighteen Art Collective” to get here.'We. The Culture' exhibit at Newfields highlights Eighteen Art Collective

Last week I attended the opening celebration for the new exhibit at Newfields. As I walked through the exhibit, taking a few minutes to look at each piece, read the artist’s description and talk to friends about what we saw and thought, I kept thinking how it’s so awesome to see contemporary art from local Black artists in our local museum — and how I want more of this.

Black artists are a major part of the cultural scene of Indianapolis, and the art of Black artists is often well represented at various art shows and festivals year-round. The annual Meet the Artists event at Central Library during Black History Month is one such event that comes to mind. It’s been around for decades and has become a cultural institution. It’s a great opportunity to admire artwork by Black creators.

While I appreciate those events and always want them to exist, “We. The Culture: Works by the Eighteen Art Collective” felt different because it is different. It’s different because it took so long to get there and because art by Black artists and the Black community historically have been excluded from cultural institutions such as museums. There’s this unspoken belief that we don’t have an interest in art. I and the hundreds of people in attendance during the celebration beg to differ.
