The U.S. Army in 1870 invited the Black Seminoles living in Mexico to return to the U.S. and enlist to help fight hostile native tribes in exchange for land in the Indian Territory — a promise that was not kept. Pictured is the grave marker of Sampson July, a Black Seminole Scout buried near Brackettville, Texas. Four of the graves there hold the remains of Scouts who received the Medal of Honor for gallantry during the Indian Wars.
The unofficial Underground Railroad through Texas helped an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 enslaved individuals make their way to freedom through the secret southern route, says Jade Robinson in. This success resulted from a series of hidden signposts along the way and hidden messages in quilts laid on porches with sewn squares that directed their path and aided their passage.
The Seminoles began the yearlong migration south through Texas to their new land of opportunity in Mexico as they resolved to “maintain their freedom and independence at any cost,” writes Mulroy. Their journey was dangerous, as both Creek and Texas bounty hunters along the way would try to capture and return them to slavery.
