Boy, 13, discovered fatally wounded in park in West Ridge neighborhood, police say
A witness heard a loud pop and found a 13-year-old boy sitting on a park beach shot in the head Friday night at a West Ridge neighborhood park on the North Side.
Shortly before 10 p.m., an off-duty Chicago police officer heard a loud pop and saw a “large group” of teenagers fleeing on foot in the 7000 block of North Sacramento Avenue at Lerner Park, according to a Chicago police report.The officer called police after finding Lavel Winslow under a gazebo in the middle of the park, seated on a bench and bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head, police said.
Winslow was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead there, police said.According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Winslow lived in the 6300 block of North Francisco Avenue.
