Paul Ferran was being transported to hospital by police officers 'for treatment to a serious fracture of his jaw in three different places''
A West Belfast man who spat blood over a police officer while being taken to hospital for treatment to a broken jaw today narrowly avoided prison.
Judge Gordon Kerr KC said that where "someone spits at a police officer, especially blood, an immediate custodial sentence is the normal result which is on a deterrent basis''. "One of the effects of that would be that he would have had to expectorate blood on a regular basis due to the blood in inside his mouth,'' said Judge Kerr.
