City Hall so far only has £100,000 in its coffers for the programme
Belfast Council has vowed to look for money for fuel hardship grants for residents after Stormont ended a £1million fund to the city for those finding difficulties heating their homes.
The council agreed to write to the Department for Communities seeking confirmation as to whether any in-year funding allocation for hardship would be made available to the council, while also highlighting the need for a longer-term commitment to such funding by the Department and NI Executive. Rather than just note the reduced amount to be found by the council for a fuel hardship programme this year, elected representatives at City Hall this week agreed to defer a decision to cut the grant following a proposal from People Before Profit Councillor Michael Collins.
“Labour has proven itself equally committed as the Tories are to cutting back public services and abolishing vital safeguards for the vulnerable. Unfortunately, there has been nothing but passivity and acceptance of these measures from the Executive.”
