One councillor claimed: 'Belfast is miles behind in terms of a proper night time economy.'

A Stormont department has said there is no extra money to be found to spend on night public transport services in Belfast.

Unlike many services across Britain and the Republic of Ireland, Belfast only has late night services at special designated periods, usually Christmas. In recent years Translink has temporarily extended night-time provision of services in the run up to Christmas, up until 1am on weekends. Last year however saw a significant price increase on previous years, with a special “Nightmover” fare of £6.

At the recent meeting of the Belfast Council City Growth and Regeneration Committee, SDLP Councillor Donal Lyons said: “It’s notable looking at the date from the correspondent, that since we received this we have had the June monitoring round, which is the reallocation of finances amongst the Assembly departments.

Green Councillor Brian Smyth said: “This is frustrating. I get there is a budget deficit, but Belfast is miles behind in terms of a proper night time economy. You go to other European cities, somewhere like Berlin, and it is 24 hours. We have bars that are closing around 12 o'clock.
