SYDNEY - Australia is pinning its hopes on Chinese travellers to reboot its struggling tourism sector, but a controversial decision to screen arrivals from China for Covid-19 is threatening to set back the long-awaited recovery.
Before the pandemic, Chinese tourism to Australia was surging. In 2019, 1.44 million Chinese tourists visited Australia and spent A$12.4 billion , accounting for 15 per cent of the 9.5 million foreign arrivals that year. This made China the largest source of visitors, followed by New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States, Japan and Singapore.
