Quaker Oats announced Tuesday that its Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup will be completely replaced with a new brand, as calls to replace the brand intensified in recent weeks and other food companies, like Land O’Lakes, have previously updated their packaging to remove images critics denounced as racist.NBC News
first obtained the statement from PepsiCo, Quaker Oats’ parent company, which said"Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype” and that attempts to update the brand have been insufficient. Aunt Jemima was based on a minstrel character, NBC News reported, and the original face of the brand was Nancy Green, a formerly enslaved Black woman.
The new packaging will debut on store shelves this fall, with the new look and name to be revealed “at a later date,” NBC reported. “As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers’ expectations,” Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of Quaker Foods North America, said in aLand O’Lakes butter removed the controversial Native American woman from their packaging in February, but made no mention of race in their“Aunt Jemima is that kind of stereotype [that] is...
