The Astros' Yordan Alvarez, left and Jose Altuve ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the majors in OPS in 2022.Ending a five-year Silver Slugger drought, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve won the award Thursday, as did teammate Yordan Alvarez.
Altuve took the American League honor for the sixth time but first since 2017, when he won it for the fifth consecutive year. The 12-year veteran slashed .300/.387/.533 this year, with his .920 OPS ranking fourth in the majors. His 160 OPS+ matched his career high, set during his AL Most Valuable Player campaign of 2017.
Although he went hitless in his first 25 postseason at-bats, Altuve did go 11-for-33 after that as the Astros marched to their second championship. Alvarez, an AL Most Valuable Player finalist, hit .306/.406/.613 and drove in 97 runs to win his first Silver Slugger. His 1.019 OPS was second in the majors to Aaron Judge . Alvarez hit a career-high 37 home runs, then hit three more in the playoffs, including a three-run walk-off shot in Game 1 of the AL Division Series against Seattle and a decisive three-run bomb in Game 6 of the World Series, which the Astros won 4-1 over Philadelphia to claim the title.
Also winning Silver Slugger winners in the American League for 2022 were Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk, Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez, Angels outfielder Mike Trout, and Twins utilityman Luis Arraez.National League winners were Phillies catcher J.T.
