Yordan Alvarez is “trending” toward being the Astros’ everyday left fielder in 2023, general manager James Click said Tuesday, offering the first clues for how Houston plans to upgrade its lineup this winter.
Yordan Alvarez started a career-high 56 games in left field in 2022, and might be the Astros' everyday starter there next season.LAS VEGAS —
Alvarez started a career-high 56 games in left field last season, a number inflated by Michael Brantley’s season-ending shoulder injury suffered in June. Alvarez finished the season with seven outfield assists and, according to FanGraphs, had five defensive runs saved. “It’s trending that way, but I want to have a conversation with Yordan about how much he wants to be out there, how much he thinks being out there would affect his hitting and the other parts of his game,” Click said.
“We don’t want to do anything to take away from his bat because it makes very loud noises. It’ll be a conversation, but I do think he’s put himself in a position to play a significant amount of time out there.” Alvarez had a 1.035 OPS in 232 plate appearances as a left fielder last season. He slashed .299/.410/.593 in 327 at designated hitter — a 1.003 OPS. Across the last two seasons, Alvarez acknowledged on numerous occasions that he believes playing defense helps him remain engaged and is better for his offense. The Houston Chronicle's Chandler Rome and Jerome Solomon discuss the futures of Astros manager Dusty Baker and general manager James Click.
