Astros' Jose Altuve progresses to taking ground balls for first time since surgery
In a long-awaited development, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve fielded ground balls Tuesday for the first time sinceAltuve had a doctor’s appointment Monday and was cleared to begin limited baseball activities. On Tuesday, he fielded grounders in foul territory hit by Astros first-base coach Omar López and made short tosses to bench coach Joe Espada, who stood on the infield grass.
Astros manager Dusty Baker said it was “premature” to discuss when Altuve will be allowed to pick up a bat or throw longer distances. “The doctor said that he's done good,” Baker said. “He's done very well. He took ground balls, which is a big plus, and the next step is just to see how he feels and try to keep him on schedule.”
The Astros have yet to declare a timeline for Altuve’s return, but resuming full baseball activities signifies just one step in the rehab process. He will likely need a few weeks to ramp up, followed by minor-league rehab games before he can play for the Astros.
