The Astros on Monday put pitcher Jose Urquidy, who exited his Sunday night start against the Phillies in the sixth inning, on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder discomfort.
Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy walks off the mound after giving up a solo home run to Phillies designated hitter Kody Clemens during Sunday's fifth inning. Urquidy left the game during the sixth inning with a sore right shoulder.Urquidy said he felt “a little bit of pain” in his throwing shoulder while pitching in the sixth inning on Sunday against the Phillies.
Urquidy, who turned 28 on Monday, has a 5.20 ERA in six starts this season, including his 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball pitched against the Phillies. Urquidy’s next start was supposed to be Saturday against the Mariners in Seattle. Astros manager Dusty Baker said it is unclear how the team will navigate their starting rotation going forward, but that Bielak would be available in the bullpen starting Monday against the Giants.
Because the Astros have Thursday off, they could go through the next turn in the rotation with their other four starters on regular rest. If they choose that course of action, the next day they would need an additional starter is May 9 in Anaheim against the Angels.
