Three outs separated him from a quality start and a questionable call caused him to fume.
“That’s why he gave up the double. He wasn’t happy about the call,” catcher Martín Maldonado said. “…He was going back to being Framber from 2018 or ‘19.”Few watching remember that Framber. The past two seasons made folks forget. Valdez has blossomed into an ace and a model of consistency that seemed unfathomable after his first two major league seasons.
Immaturity issues plagued Valdez until he discovered Dr. Andy Nuñez in the winter of 2020. Nuñez is one of the Astros’ sports psychologists based in the Dominican Republic who continues to mentor Valdez. Nuñez said he told Valdez to act like he “had been doing it for a thousand days.” For five innings, Valdez obliged. He overpowered Oakland’s miserable lineup in vintage style. He struck out seven and generated 10 groundball outs. The A’s took 12 swings against Valdez’s curveball and whiffed seven times. The team averaged just an 83.9 mph exit velocity on the 15 balls it put in play.
