Niall Barry is one of five men currently standing trial accused of murdering 28-year-old council worker
One of the men accused of murdering Ashley Dale has described his attempts to flee to Europe following her shooting with the help of a man known only as "Gus the Fixer".
"For the last 12 months beforehand, about eight months, I’ve been living on me toes thinking I was wanted. On December 23, where I was living, the apartment in town I’d been living for four years, my door got took off by the police at half seven in the morning. "I was meant to be going and seeing Coldplay with her the weekend before. I’d stayed there numerous times with me girlfriend." Barry said he was "lying on the bed" when officers attended their room shortly before 11pm while his girlfriend was "standing up by the telly". He was then arrested on suspicion of murder, telling the court: "I was just in shock to be honest.
Barry said clothing found in possession was "just clothes I'd removed from the flat the day before", which he wanted his girlfriend to wash. Meanwhile, cash totalling more than £10,000 which he was carrying was said to have been the proceeds of a cannabis deal which he had collected from the car park of Hickory's Smokehouse in West Kirby immediately prior to his arrival at the hotel.
"My problem with him was four years before. I’m not saying I’m some big hard case but he’s half the size of me, I wouldn’t need a gun to have a fight with him." Mr Reiz also asked if he had been part of a plot to shoot Ms Dale. Barry said: "Not a chance in the world. Mr Greaney said: "The men who had damaged the car were not deterred. Fifty minutes later, at about 12.30am, they returned. "This time, they were not to be diverted from their intention to kill. One of the men approached the front door of 40 Leinster Road and he kicked it in. Ashley plainly became aware of what was happening. She screamed and fled towards the back door of the house, but the man entered the house and he pursued her.
