Polling suggests only 50% of the population would get a Covid-19 vaccine were it available.
The report suggested the vaccine be free and widely available to all Americans, as “economic inequalities, racially biased health systems, and a politicized pandemic environment” could affect how Americans view the vaccine when it is released.
Many of the researchers’ recommendations center on appointing familiar messengers: like grassroots organizations, local health departments and “trusted community spokespersons” to “engage early and often with communities around Covid-19 vaccination” and “neutralize” misinformation. The researchers recommend exploration of nontraditional vaccination sites like religious and senior centers to make the vaccine feel accessible and safe.
Also, a U.S. government-sponsored politically neutral panel of experts should be appointed to oversee all aspects of the vaccination effort, the research group recommends. Each state should similarly appoint a public oversight committee to make sure distribution is fair, overall acting as monitors of the vaccine program at a community level. “Baseline vaccine hesitancy and uneven access to care, coupled with current opposition to maskwearing and physical distancing despite active COVID-19 disease, suggest that public health authorities need to rethink how best to manage the pandemic and to spur recovery.
