Activists on the Spanish island of Tenerife have launched a hunger strike against the relentless expansion of tourism in the Canary Islands. The protesters are demanding an immediate stop to the construction of a new hotel and beach resort in the island's south.
Next weekend will see a wave of protests throughout the archipelago. Last year, the Canary Islands saw a surge in visitors, with 13.9 million tourists, a 13% increase from the previous year and six times the local population of 2.2 million. The left-wing Podemos party had previously warned that the 400-villa resort was being built "on one of the last virgin zones" of the Tenerife coast.
"Ironically, it is tourism itself which is destroying the very same product which it is selling," he stated. This sentiment echoes growing frustration with tourist numbers in Barcelona and other Spanish tourist hotspots. In a recent chat with Cadena Ser Radio, Housing Minister Ms Rodriguez stated the government is gearing up for direct intervention to limit the number of holiday apartments across the nation. She also confessed about a whopping shortage of 1.5 million public housing units.
