Spain's Labour Minister spoke out last week in support of pubs and eateries closing by 1pm. It comes as the country's government looks to enforce a 35-hour working week.
Spain's proposed new rules for bars and restaurants have sparked concerns that UK tourists might choose to holiday elsewhere. The country's Labour Minister, Yolanda Diaz, suggested last week that pubs and eateries should close by 1pm, as part of a move towards a 35-hour working week.
The proposal has also faced opposition from Spanish unions and the nightlife sector. Local news site, Majorca Daily Bulletin, reported fears that 'early closing would lead to some tourists going elsewhere'. The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, said on X: "Spain has the best nightlife in the world, with streets full of life and freedom. And they also provide jobs. They want us Puritans, materialists, socialists, without soul, without light and without restaurants because they feel like it. Bored and at home."
