One of the greatest writers and orators of the 19th century will be commemorated by Liverpool's Everyman and Playhouse Theatre
A man considered to be one of the most important African-Americans of the 19th century visited Liverpool and Ireland in the 1800s, it has emegred.
Liverpool historian Laurence Westgaph, from Liverpool Black History Research Group, who is historian in residence at National Museums Liverpool informed the theatre of this historic connection, and told the ECHO: "Frederick Douglass is an absolute inspiration for myself and my own work. He is an inspiration for people from all communities and his fearless fight to end slavery and the oppression of women is something all people can take inspiration from.
Laurence added: "I’m looking forward to working with the team to find an artist to create a fitting plaque to detail Frederick Douglass’ role. Not just as an abolitionist but as a social reformer, feminist and orator of great importance”. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel including Laurence and Adeyinka Olushonde , Dr Teena Cartwright-Terry , Nancy Msiska , Lucy Byrne and Mark Da Vanzo . The winning submission will receive an artist fee of £1,000; and there is a separate budget for the creation and installation.
Douglass was moved around in his early youth from one slave master to another and was fortunate enough to find Mrs Auld who taught him reading and writing. This soon turned sour when Mrs Auld's husband found out.
