AMD's 16-core flagship finally arrives and it's absolutely amazing
Starting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider and the Ruzen 9 3950X makes some small gains over the rest of the Zen 2 CPU range, but not massively so. Intel is still quicker, most notably with the Core i9-9980XE and Core i9-9900KS, even with a graphics card that's a fair bit less powerful than the likes of the RTX 2080 Ti. Unsurprisingly, the Ryzen 9 3950X was a little quicker at stock speed thanks to it retaining that 4.7GHz boost frequency - lost when you apply a manual overclock.
Overall the the Ryzen 9 3950X is as stunning as it is disruptive in terms of performance. It's forced Intel to drop its prices in a big way, offers incredible multi-threaded performance for the money and is compatible with older AM4 motherboards too.
