CLEVELAND, Ohio – I was listening to talk radio and the discussion quickly moved from the Cavaliers to betting on the Cavaliers.The Cavs were playing in Memphis. Cavs star Donovan Mitchell was hurt. Would Cavs guard Darius Garland score more than 24 points. That was the “prop bet.”Understand, I don’t bet on sports. I don’t bet anything. Period.
While sports betting is legal, it’s an awful idea for those of us in the media business who cover the teams closely.Occasionally, I run into a fan who starts a casual conversation. Soon, it moves into specific questions about how long a certain player will be out due to injuries – or when he’ll be back playing. Or when a team wants to rest some of its best players, as Golden State did against the Cavs last week.
Sports gambling is different and more intoxicating than many other forms of gambling. That’s especially true for the audience watching the Cavs game and other sporting events.We think we understand sports. We tend to remember when we were right about a certain player or trade – or when a certain team would win. And we forget when we were wrong.
He had to drive to the track. He had to study the form, walk up to the window. He had to pay cash. It took effort to bet. It wasn’t done in seconds from home on a phone – and on a site that offered other options to place bets.
