Still, it never hurts to hear someone else say, “You got this.” And Terry heard exactly that from a man he worked with for nine years during his first time as a Texas assistant. Barnes and Terry remain steadfast friends. They talk often, sometimes about hoops, sometimes about life, and pull for one another’s team from afar. And for a few hours Saturday night, they’ll be adversaries in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
Barnes, hired by Tennessee in 2015 after leading Texas to 402 wins and its only Final Four berth since the field’s expansion to 64 teams, has the Volunteers ranked first in defensive efficiency, scoring defense, opponent's shooting percentage and opponent’s 3-point percentage. The Vols also reside among the nation's top 15 in steals, forced turnovers and scoring margin.
