Birmingham Airport went into lockdown on Tuesday after Aer Lingus EAG47S was forced to divert

An Aer Lingus flight headed for George Best Belfast City Airport had to be diverted back to Birmingham on Tuesday evening after a 'security incident' on board.

The aircraft landed safely at the airport, with all passengers and crew disembarking as investigations are carried out as to what led to the alert. All flights into Birmingham have been diverted to other airports, while departures have been temporarily halted. Flight EAG47S departed just before 4pm before being returned to Birmingham around 10 minutes later, after squawking an emergency 7700 code.A spokesperson for the airline said it was currently working to accommodate affected passengers.
