With the announcement that the hit sitcom will return for its last ever episode on Christmas Day – we’re not going to lie, it’s well lush news – thoughts turn not to the titular couple, Essex boy Gavin Shipman and his Valleys sweetheart Stacey West , whose on-off romance ended up in a stable marriage and three children. All we really care about are Gavin and Stacey’s best friends, their love-hate bond and the prospect of their long-awaited happy ending.
James Corden as Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith, Joanna Page as Stacey Shipman, Mathew Horne as Gavin Shipman and Ruth Jones as Nessa Jenkins, in the 2019 Gavin & Stacey Christmas special This unpretentious pair – played by the show’s co-creators, Ruth Jones and James Corden – embody the show’s everyday warmth and earthy wit. They gaveits breakout catchphrases – Smithy’s legendary curry order ; his cries of “Gav-lar!” and “Pamelaaaar!”; Nessa’s “Oh!”, “Tidy”, “What’s occurring?” or “Crackin’”. The pair loathed each other on sight – yet in a fateful encounter in the very first episode, drinks flowed, one thing led to another and they had sex in a hotel bathroom .
Despite Smithy’s protestations that he didn’t fancy Nessa , he kept coming back for more. As he told Gav: “She just sucks me in. She’s like a Dyson!” It’s been a rollercoaster relationship, with more ups, downs, twists and turns than the Cyclone in Barry Island Pleasure Park. Yet somehow they’ve successfully co-parented their son, Neil the Baby. A baby who is now in his teens.
