As a Black man himself, Billy Dee Williams, 87, should know better.
Billy Dee Williams doesn’t realise the damage his words can have Billy Dee Williams has said some questionable things in the past, but defending blackface might just be the most ridiculous of them all. The film star, 87, best known for his role as Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back, has said he sees nothing wrong with non-Black actors wearing blackface – the offensive practice of darkening one’s skin tone to appear Black.
Despite his many years on this planet and privileged position, it’s a shame that Williams doesn’t see just how damaging his comments really are. It’s so important that when someone from a minority community has the platform and the ear of mainstream media, they use that wisely to promote something worthwhile and positive.
