Congratulations to the FIT’s class of 2020. Meet 11 of them, here.

Fashion, as we know, can be used as a means of self expression. Generally speaking, self-identity has been the starting point for many of the student collections that I have seen. The work of this year’s graduating classes seems to have shifted slightly away from memory-mining and personal narrative toward engagement with larger societal issues, and with technology.

Notable was the broad range of feelings the class expressed through their work. At the same time that Sanmati Shetty was exploring the journey “from familiar childhood to fantastical adulthood,” Chadeese Perriel was giving dimensional materiality to emotions like “feeling sad, depressed, and numb.” As Melissa Posner explored her relationship with her twin through knitwear, Amruta Sheree Behera considered how humans relate to technology, and vice versa.

I hope to unify the past and present to inspire current and future generations to create a more innovative, conscious, and vibrant future. During my creative journey, I have sought to explore and represent distinct, and often unseen, pieces of society, culture, and history [in order] to build a body of work that uncovers unique narratives and memories and sparks curiosity in forward-thinking minds while encouraging expression and exploration of identity.

It needs to focus more on being sustainable. I am a strong believer in quality versus quantity. Limiting the amount of fashion shows will decrease the amount of clothes being made yearly. Ideally, taking this critical step would allow consumers to have more of an appreciation for fashion and give small independent brands more respect for their creativity.Melissa Posner, 23, from Perth Amboy, New JerseyI want my designs to portray uniqueness for the wearer.
