Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT For decades, great horror books have undergone some terrible film adaptations. From urban legends to true-crime books to bestselling novels, literature has influenced horror cinema since its silent, black-and-white origins.

10 The Body Snatchers Jack Finney’s cult classic The Body Snatchers put a spin on alien invasion tropes in the pantheon of sci-fi horror. In his 1955 novel, Finney documented an attack triggered by alien seeds that soon grew into human clones, taking on the bodies of sleeping victims. This premise has been adapted to darkly philosophical levels in three successful Invasion of the Body Snatchers movies. Then came the fourth attempt in 2007: The Invasion.

8 The Haunting Of Hill House Shirley Jackson’s 1959 trailblazing horror The Haunting of Hill House was not only atmospherically rich; it was also tragically sentimental. Instead of resorting to obvious jump scares, Jackson set out to craft a more intricate tale of human attachment and spiritual possession. While 1963’s The Haunting and Mike Flanagan’s 2018 Netflix series rank among the best Shirley Jackson adaptations, the novel also spawned a universally panned 1999 adaptation.

4 Vampire Blood Trilogy Irish young adult fiction writer Darren O'Shaughnessy’s initial claim to fame was the 12-part book series The Saga of Darren Shan. The titular protagonist in these books found himself on numerous adventures after getting wrapped up in the world of vampires. Just a year after the first Twilight movie surged interest in the supernatural beings, the first three books of the Irish novelist’s series inspired the 2009 movie Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.
