Readers react to a recent op-ed that called out Beto O’Rourke for interrupting a press conference in Uvalde. They aregue that O’Rourke showed real leadership.Re: “Real leaders don’t act like Beto O’Rourke,” Other Views, Marc Whyte, Thursday:
It was remarkable to read the preposterous logic of Marc Whyte’s guest column, which took Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke to task for interrupting Gov. Greg Abbott’s press conference in Uvalde. I cheered O’Rourke. He had the courage to break the spell cast by Republicans that creates our passive response to gun violence. There was Abbott subjecting the people of Uvalde, pained and suffering, to Republican platitudes about sharing pain and suffering, prayers and hollow promises that “we’ll do something some time.”
Yet Whyte calls this performance “real leadership.” But this was not a one-off tragedy, which was O’Rourke’s point. The Republicans repeat this every time. There will be another gun massacre, and Whyte probably will want everyone to shut up then, too.The real leader in the room during Gov. Greg Abbott’s press conference was Beto O’Rourke.Second, O’Rourke was the only one in the room who was standing up for the children. Abbott was already blaming “mental health” and anything other than guns.
When is a good time to put the Republican leaders’ feet to the fire to actually address the elephant in the room?
