The world No.2 has gone nearly 10 years without winning a Major and had only one top-20 finish on the PGA Tour this season.
Butch Harmon has urged Rory McIlroy to simply “relax and play” before his latest crack at completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters.
“So I talked to him about how to relax, how to enjoy himself – and how to enjoy the moment. I said just, ‘Go play golf, shot by shot – you’re Rory McIlroy, for Christ’s sake, one of the best players who’s ever played the game.’ And the course was built for him, if you look at the way he drives the ball. It sounds easy but he wants it so bad, he just puts an excess amount of pressure on himself. He just has to relax and play golf, which is very easy to say because he wants it so bad.
McIlroy played two practice rounds at the course last week and plans not to return until Tuesday. But his routine with Harmon is more familiar after first meeting when he was just 14. The American said: “We were in Ireland and we had 30 of the best juniors in the country. I told my brothers, ‘I played with this little curly-haired kid named Rory something. This kid’s got a chance to be special.’ Well, here he is... one of the best players in the world today.
