Minor-league reliever Matt Ruppenthal bears a striking resemblance to Yankees pitcher and former Astros ace Gerrit Cole.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A few days off during his season at Class A Advanced Asheville meant Matt Ruppenthal could drive four hours home to Nashville. He and his girlfriend, Grace, got to a restaurant somewhere on Broadway, the entertainment district that dominates downtown. The couple put its name on a waiting list and caught up while waiters prepared their table.
“Probably like five times a day since I’ve been up here,” Ruppenthal said. “I think everybody’s been even more talkative about it. I’d say a new player comes up to me just about every day.” Ruppenthal arrived in pro ball “beat up” after his college career. He threw through elbow pain during his Vanderbilt tenure and required ulnar nerve transposition in 2018. There were no problems with his ulnar collateral ligament — the one repaired during Tommy John surgery.
