DEVELOPING: Yonkers cop shot, sources say; condition unknown
The officer, who has not been identified, was shot in the abdomen and was conscious and alert when taken into surgery, law enforcement sources saidA Yonkers detective was shot in the abdomen Wednesday afternoon, and was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
Police said at a press conference that the shooting happened at the corner of Elm and Linden streets just after 2 p.m. as officers assigned to the Westchester Safe Streets task force conducted a gun investigation, along with members of the FBI. The detective was in the middle of an operation to buy a firearm, according to law enforcement sources.
As law enforcement went to arrest three suspects, two of the suspects went into a bodega on the corner, while another tried to push past the Yonkers officer. The cop pushed back, and the suspect fired one shot from his pocket, striking the detective in his abdomen. The injured cop, who has not been identified, was conscious and alert when taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where police described his condition as critical but stable after being taken into surgery. He suffered injuries to his colon, intestines and kidneys, causing him to lose a"tremendous amount of blood," but police said he was expected to recover.
