With a single comment made to the Jedi Council of the High Republic era, Yoda accurately predicted how and why Emperor Palpatine would rise to power.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic - Shadows of Starlight #1 The era of the High Republic takes place roughly 200 years before the Star Wars prequel trilogy, yet even so, it was during that time when Yoda accidentally predicted Palpatine’s rise to power, and by extension, the fall of the Jedi. Not only that, but Yoda even pinpointed exactly how and why Palpatine would win.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The story of how Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine became the Emperor is told in the Star Wars prequel trilogy as well as within the Clone Wars series. Palpatine recruited Count Dooku to launch a separatist campaign of united systems seeking autonomy from the Galactic Republic.
Yoda Believed The Jedi Order Deserved To Fall If They Couldn’t Stop Palpatine In Star Wars: The High Republic - Shadows of Starlight #1 by Charles Soule and Ibraim Roberson, Yoda recruits the help of a man who was once a Jedi Knight, but who fell to the dark side. The man’s name is Azlin Rell, and when Yoda brought him before the Jedi Council, they immediately drew their lightsabers. Yoda tells his peers to lower their lightsabers immediately, and that Azlin was no threat to them.
While it is true that Palpatine wasn’t exactly unarmed when he was confronted by just four members of the Jedi Council in Revenge of the Sith, the larger point Yoda was making still stands. Yoda was saying that the Jedi Council should be strong enough to guide the entire galaxy towards the light, and that nothing - especially one old man - should be able to break them.
The comparison here is mostly metaphorical, with the main lesson being that if a single agent of darkness can destroy a pillar of light, then that pillar wasn’t strong enough to stand on its own in the first place. However, the words Yoda used were eerily literal, as both Azlin and Palpatine were both relatively unarmed old men who stood before the Jedi Council as dark siders.
