SILVERTON, South Africa: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday lauded the Ford Motor Co's 100-year history of assembling vehicles in South Africa and underscored Washington's resolve to expand trade ties with countries that it"can count on", including South Africa.

"Africa will shape the future of the global economy," she said."We know that a thriving Africa is in the interest of the United States. A thriving Africa means a larger market for our goods and services. It means more investment opportunities for our businesses." Yellen said other US companies, including Cisco, General Electric, and Visa also planned big investments, attracted by expanding markets fuelled by a demographic boom that will see Africa account for a quarter of the world’s population by 2050.
