As the walks and home runs piled up, it seemed his days as a starter were numbered. Fast forward to now, things are going much better for Schmidt. He's been flying under the radar, pitching with an xBA hovering around .230 in his last four starts. What's more, he's managed to bump up his ground ball rate to 50% or higher in his last two outings. And here's the kicker: In two of his last three games, he didn't let a single home run or walk slip by.
One of Schmidt's standout performances in recent weeks was against the Red Sox. He went out and struck out eight batters over 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two runs. To top it all off, his ERA against the Red Sox this season is a rock-solid 2.87 in 15 2/3 innings. Now, that's some serious improvement.
