ST. LOUIS — The Yankees will try to play two on Saturday — but may need to cross their fingers.
Friday’s game against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium was postponed by thunderstorms, setting up a day-night doubleheader on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. CT.“I hear the first one looks OK and then the evening looks uncertain,” manager Aaron Boone said Friday night.Luis Severino is now scheduled to start Game 1 against Jack Flaherty before the Yankees use a bullpen game in the nightcap against Matthew Liberatore.
Gerrit Cole was initially scheduled to pitch on Saturday, but Friday’s postponement bumped him to Sunday when he could square off against former teammate Jordan Montgomery. The change of plans means the Yankees will now need a spot starter on Wednesday against the Orioles instead of Sunday. They will be able to call up a 27th man for Saturday’s nightcap — possibly Randy Vasquez, who was expected to make the spot start on Sunday — though Boone was not ready to name him on Friday night because the Yankees were trying to make sure they could get the player a flight to St. Louis in time.
