The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported last week Michael Kay is seriously contemplating retiring from his ESPN New York radio show after more than two decades on the air.
The issue? Ray Santiago, a producer on the “DiPietro & Rothenberg” morning show took at shot at Kay and his rating: “Is it the fear that this show is now on the rise, and that show’s kind of gone in the other direction lately?”“Ray Santiago made a comment about ratings?” Kay asked, asking the YES Network camera to pan on him. “Do you realize, Ray, that all I’d have to do is make one phone call and you’d be on the unemployment line.
At the end of September, Kay’s multi-million dollar contract with ESPN New York runs out and, while there have been talks about an extension, Kay, according to sources, has told ESPN officials his expectation is to step away. Many of them believe he is not bluffing.
