Plano native Brandon Aubrey enters the season having only kicked field goals in the USFL. His story is well-documented: From local software engineer, to...

was a 29-year-old rookie and finished the season converting 80.6% of his field goals and 32 of 33 extra-point attempts. That seems like a long time ago considering Maher wasn’t brought back following a strong 2022 season that ended when he got the yips on extra point attempts.Having success as a rookie kicker does happen. Nick Folk was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007 after he made 83.9% of his field goal tries and nailed all 53 extra-point attempts.

“First time I stood behind him I felt the ball come off his foot and I definitely knew he was going to be OK,” McCarthy said of Aubrey. “The talent is there. He reminds me of a young Mason Crosby. When Mason came into the league, heck I hope he has the same start of his career as Mason, too.”Is this the best Cowboys roster Troy Aikman has seen since he was on the team?Aubrey said he doesn’t feel like a rookie given his age. He’s also been a rookie for two other teams in two different sports.

It was his work in the spring —14 of 15 made field goals and converting all of his 35 extra points — that caught the eye of Cowboys’ officials.“I would say the only time I had a different approach was in the MLS and it didn’t really work out so well for me,” said Aubrey, who spent two seasons in the MLS. “A little bit scared, nervous there, didn’t feel like I belonged. That’s something I learned from and didn’t want to repeat.

“I’m just focusing on the job at hand,” Aubrey said. “You don’t really look at the media stuff. I know that’s not good for you guys. For me, I got to focus on my job and limit all those distractions whether that’s turning off the phone and the notifications and going out and doing my job in practice and make it as realistic to a game as it can be. Not even letting [negativity] creep into it.”
